Mainly because of the duration of the occupation. The occupation of China started in the 2nd half of the 1930's. Korea was occupied since 1910. Same crimes against humanity, but it lasted for an entire generation.

By the way, something most people might not be aware of. Did you know that Korea used to be spelled Corea with a 'C'? It was Japan who respelled Corea as Korea because 'K' comes after 'J', and the Japanese empire didn't think a conquered nation ought to be listed before the conquering nation alphabetically.

The need for dominance makes people and countries do some screwed up things.

That sounds like utter BS to me.
Korea like Japan are and were both spelled by the use of "Kanji" or modified "Kanji" just to use the Japanese expression for the Chinese characters.

As for the "official" romanizing, I doubt the Japs were much concerned about that back in 1910.
