Only illegal immigrants are welcomed to the USA - many PhD candidates now are heading elsewhere, and I don't think that's ever happened in the history of the USA. Singapore is very, very wise in their timing - they will get top talent that we are not getting. Some phd candidates waffle about coming to the USA vs going to a more minority friendly country, and once the word gets out what Singapore is doing, that'll create more of an incentive for students to go there, where they can feel safe. In the Valley, there has been a noticeable drop-off of darker-skinned PhD candidates entering this country, while there has been an increase in immigrants from East blocs (that seem to smoke). Earlier in the day I was wondering why. Or, maybe PhD candidate students are feeling a lot less welcomed in the USA. Even Hindu's are being stripped search at the US airports, which is ironic if you know anything about international history. I hear some (not all, but some) of the top-most talent is now going to three other countries rather than the USA. I've never known any time in my entire life, other than now, where I'm hearing top talent decline the USA. I have to say, I really love nearly everything about Singapore. Their leadership is so smart. Mercury News said Singapore now has a metric in place to measure whether the govt is successfully attracting people to their country. Maybe next time around, we should demand that candidates for the position of US Presidency must take an IQ test. Regards, Amy J
