As long as Austria does the dirty work for them, the Blairs, Chiracs and Schroeders can easily stand up tall for Turkey here but if reelection is of importance to them, they will find ways out of that position in due time.

I think you're right about the leaders. And I have to add, the fears of Europeans are not unfounded. There have been some problems already with Eastern Europeans migrating to the West; hence the Polish plumber ads in France. The economic gap between Turkey and Europe is even larger, meaning that its likely a Turk migration would be much bigger and would cause more discomfort and unease. I don't see why Turkey's admission can't be stepped over a period of ten years to mitigate against some of the worst effects.
