I agree with your thesis that politicians always over-promise.

But I don't at all see where that means that a Balanced Budget amendment would FORCE taxes higher.

It's not always that EASY to just raise taxes willy-nilly.

The public tends to not like higher taxes... and they have a long memory.

A Balanced Budget amendment could finally provide our politicians with enough BACKBONE to cut out the pork, corporate welfare, 'special tax preference' subsidies, etc.

With their backs to the wall, they would have to get serious.

And, a serious TAX SIMPLIFICATION AND LOOPHOLE SLASHING REFORM (hopefully with the introduction of a lower flat rate system like much of the world is considering, or has already rolled out) would also produce STRONGER ECONOMIC GROWTH (up to an extra 1 1/2 % per annum) that would easily obviate the 'need' to raise taxes.

You hope for some magical new leader to come along and rescue us is just silly, certainly the current Prez is not the one for the job of producing balanced budgets, or SERIOUS tax reform.

It will take a STRUCTURAL reform... not some magic new leader.

Meanwhile, if you stand among the ranks of those who OPPOSE the Balanced Budget amendment... then I have to count you as one of the ENABLERS of this Big Government, Big Deficit mess.

Lead or get out of the way... all you are doing is supporting the liberal 'big mommy' and the social conservative 'big daddy' government.
