There is a huge difference. Every single country in the world is more or less socialist. The US is about 35% socialist, I'd say. 40% tops. European countries are about 55%. All socialism means is that the government runs the big programs vs. corporations and privatization.

So which works better? Well, if you could trust corporations they might be better but we often can't trust them. Especially if they are deregulated. Social programs are cheaper to run and more cost-efficient because the profit cost is cut out. But both can fall victim to either inefficiency or greed/corruption. An inefficient beaurocracy is no good. The best would be an efficient beaurocracy with incentives for personnel to perform well.

Communism is a socialist military dictatorship where the state runs everything, including peoples lives. Most socialist countries are liberal and tolerant and stay out of their citizens' lives. You do have to pay high taxes, but you get taken care of from birth to death. If you're a woman with children that's particularly important. Communism takes away almost all human rights. You're taken care of to a degree, but you could also be arrested at any time for doing nothing.

Quit comparing socialism to communism. They're very different.
