re: Why don't you take a bus?

The primary reason is that a bus doesn't go where I go.

I've posted this before on this thread, but I'll do it again---

Institute a sliding "guzzler" tax on sales of inefficient passenger vehicles with a max of $5K. At the same time institute a "smart car" credit for more efficient passenger vehicles with a max of $5K. Revenue neutral, technology agnostic, doesn't raise the cost of gas which impacts those who can afford it least.

The results?

1. Immediate lower gas prices as the market realizes demand will decrease; the risk premium decreases.
2. Lower long term gas prices as supply/demand get's back in line.
3. More efficient fleet of vehicles will add disposable dollars and stimulate the economy and savings.
4. Lower gas prices will add discretionary dollars and stimulate the economy and savings.
5. Lower oil imports will ease the trade imbalance.
6. Lower oil prices will decrease our subsidy to the major oil producing countries. (And we have significant political "issues" with almost all these countries).
7. Lower pollution.

It's not complicated... we have 5% of the world's population and use 25% of it's oil. We are the problem and the solution... we need to get more efficient, starting now. And when we do it will have all sorts of benefits... there is probably no worse use of capital than burning excess gasoline; productive dollars going up in fumes.
