Part of the movement’s success came from its ability to pursue common goals in spite of divisions—between pro-business libertarians and social conservatives, tax cutters and deficit hawks, intellectuals and evangelicals, millionaires and the white working class. But Bush’s philosophy of corporate conservatism—more Harding than Reagan; not anti-government, just anti-good-government, with a tone of authoritarian piety and legislation written by lobbyists—has shown that Republican unity was always based less on intellectual coherence than on a willingness to keep one’s mouth shut.

One of the best written articles I've read on the subject. Do you happen to have a link?

I had not realized that there had been a liberal movement and that it started in the 1960s. I thought it had always been about the about GOP ever since Reagan.

In the same vein, yesterday Coulter was on speaking with O'Reilly but not on his show. In any case, they were discussing Iraq......it soon became clear that O'Reilly and Coulter disagree on the issue with O'Reilly surprisingly thinking things are not good and wanting more troops sent over. Meanwhile, Coulter contended that things are great and cited the two elections, and the fact, that women voted as signs of huge improvement. Of course, we all know that Coulter suffers from dementia and egomania.

It showed the increasing division among the gop ranks identified in Packer's article. People like Buchanan have always disagreed but people like O'Reilly and Coulter have been pretty much in sync. I just hope the splintering continues...........
