re: But in a world where the U.N. is unwilling to put teeth into stopping nuclear proliferation, we have no choice but to stop it ourselves, by force if necessary.

The UN is the security council, the rest is for show. We are (were?) the leader of the free world, and have huge influence in the security council.

If you want to reform the world, we can't do it alone. It doesn't work. We can't even reform Iraq or Afghanistan, two of the most God forsaken backward places on earth.

The lesson learned in the last 10 years is that lateral-ism works and unilateralism doesn't work. Period. All our efforts should be on building a consensus in the UN security council and the rest of the world community. Then we can move forward as a huge economic force, and if absolutely necessary a military force.

Unfortunately we elected the neo's who have marginalized both the UN and NATO out of hubris at exactly the wrong time in history.

"Given that fact, we have to cajole, threaten, fight any Muslim country that attempts to spread or build up a nuclear capability."

Pakistan already HAS (spread nuclear capability). Should we nuke them? The guy that did the spreading is a national hero under the protection of the Pakistani government. We've never even been allowed to question him. The lesson of the Bush foreign policy is, if you've GOT nukes, you get to play by the club rules.

As long as we allow Israel to possess an undetermined, uninspected number of nukes, we have absolutely no moral authority to instruct other countries. As long as we possess 10k+ nukes, we have no moral authority. Nukes will be easier and easier to obtain as technology advances. The genie is OUT. We had a good "build down" going with the Russians, but Bush has practically ended that initiative. The chimpistration has cancelled decades of progress here.

No one disputes that Bush has made a mess. But in a world where the U.N. is unwilling to put teeth into stopping nuclear proliferation, we have no choice but to stop it ourselves, by force if necessary.

How can you say that when Bush has disengaged from nearly every treaty restricting nuclear proliferation? Its the ultimate hypocrisy........we don't want anyone to have nukes except us and some of our closest friends.

IMO we can talk ending nuclear proliferation when we walk the walk.
