In law the wording is everything. The issue is not and should not be posed as protectionism from less developed countries. Rather the issue should be preventing the companies from doing an end run of labour and environment protection laws vi outsourcing. In other words American workers should be put on equal footing, not in the sense of wages, but in the sense that if child labour is illegal here, it should be illegal for a US company to do it everywhere. If worker safety is important here, then it should be implemented in all plants of an American company. Then we'll see how competitive each country is and we'll let the chips fall where they may.
