Eye-opening article.

That ease of entry to the industry is one of the reasons hedge fund fraud takes place in the U.S. but is virtually nonexistent in Europe, according to the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA), an industry group based in London. . . .

"You can't have been a librarian and then decide you want to open a hedge fund,"

but you can be a message board poster <ggg>......

Laughable nonsense, mostly with respect to the comments on convertible arbitrage.

A look at the actual returns shows that either this journalist is relying upon completely anecdotal information or, perhaps, didn't bother to research the performance of the indices at all. (A "wrenching case" indeed.)

In a year where the DJIA and NASDAQ are down approximately 5.13% YTD (S&P500 down almost 3%), do YTD returns of -4.51% (and +2.74% in the last three months) constitute a "meltdown"?

LOL.
