Relatively few of them (recruiters) were in the south. Then when the government of Ngo Dinh Diem and his brother Ngo Dinh Nhu went too far with their nepotism, promotion of the Catholic faith and autocratic rule, the Buddhists began to rise against the government. Some Buddhist monks protested against the government by setting themselves ablaze in public. Not long afterwards, the Ngoh brothers were murdered. Some folks believed they were murdered with the connivance of the US which had plans for Vietnam. To have an excuse to invade Vietnam with a view of putting it under American control in order to contain Communism and prevent its spread elsewhere in S.E. Asia, President Johnson "created" the Gulf of Tonkin Incident in 1964. After that, the Vietminh, subsequently called the Vietcong, came down in full force to battle the American and allied forces. Backed by the Soviets and China, the Vietcong proved to be more than a match for the Americans and allies. After the Tet Offensive led by General Giap, the initiative of the war fell to the Vietcong. Common sense dictated that both President Johnson and President Nixon should have ended the war during their consecutive watch. But as neither of them wanted to be the first president in American history to lose a war, the war dragged on to 1974. While the Americans claimed they achieved an honourable withdrawal, the ugly truth is that they had the asses kicked real good! Yet they never learn..... They say that history repeats itself. Right now, President Bush would not withdraw from Iraq because of hubris.
