Because the religious right has gained an awful lot of influence over the past couple of decades. That, and the pro-business/anti-tax/no regulation group and Bush was a no-brainer.

I was living in Austin when the chimp first ran for Governor. I saw early on the Rovian tactics he used to become President. Whispering campaigns linking Ann Richards with lesbians, etc. He had a lot LESS of a Texas accent then, and actually did a decent job in the debates. Now, he sounds like a hick and seems to be mentally impaired.

We now know Reagan was slipping into Alzheimer's in his second term - did the chimp have a concealed stroke?
