Their grandparents came to France for jobs, and found jobs. But there are fewer unskilled jobs today, and the the grandkids, being French, are not as happy to take them as their grandparents were. Meantime, the police harass them and they have no upward mobility.

They do seem to be quite shrewd in their tactics. I think they've gone to school on the French media coverage of the Palestinian intifada. Whatever you do, make sure it looks good on camera and stays just shy of being lethal enough to bring a full-scale military crackdown. Burning cars answers admirably.

I notice that they are not killing people (I know there have been a couple of fatalities, but in such widespread riots I should have expected much more; just look at the totals for Watts), much less sending out bombers to achieve mass casualties. Somebody has taken the measure of French government responses quite well. Mark Steyn seems to be the only commentator to have pointed this out so far.
