Read a great deal about Ghandi and I can not see why you brought him into the picture.

The British were not infected with religious fanaticism. The Zionists are. So much so that they have publicly stated what their goals are(no shame there). Removing Palestinians from Greater Israel. Sharon's own recent remarks on his plans for the West Bank are enough to prevent non-violence as a viable path. The problem is that a wider understanding of the right wing in Israeli politics just doesn't get publicised enough to force a change of US opinion vis á vis Israel.

And talk about welfare, 6 billion dollars per year to Israel, year in and year out. 20 bucks per year for every American. Now that's welfare.

Your concept of welfare is simplistic, inaccurate, and at odds with the Scandinavian model.

1) The qualifications for getting a job today are quite different from those required 50 years ago.
2) In a society that is hostile to particular groups (Muslims in Denmark and France) getting a job is quite difficult.
3) When 2nd and 3rd generations can't get jobs even though they speak the language and have qualified themselves for jobs then you have the makings of a powder keg.
4) If jobs aren't available then no amount of accountability will help.

As to your fish argument, remember that The Grand Banks are empty. If there are no fish then it doesn't help to teach someone to fish.
The whole point behind the Scandinavian model is to ease the severe dislocations caused by a loss of a job and to thereby insure social stability.

Poverty in the US
"In 2004, 12.7 percent of all persons lived in poverty. In 1993 the poverty rate was 15.1 percent. Between 1993 and 2000, the poverty rate fell each year, reaching 11.3 percent in 2000. Poverty has risen in each of the last four years."
