"In fact, it might prove to be a golden age where economic growth and innovation are the twin goals and not the accumualation of power."

Maybe. But what would contain the religious fanaticism then?

It appears the religious fanaticism may be collapsing on itself. The people of Jordan are none to happy with the bombs in Amman. The people in PA got rid of their ID proponents. This is not the Dark Ages. We have already had the Age of Reason.......centuries of solid science. I have a feeling the average person is getting very sick of religious fanatics.

I don't buy the connection.

On the other hand, I used to believe in the US becoming the ultimate benevolent super power. But the "power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" thing was right, more true than the US self image, than all our supposed good intentions.

That's the huge disappointment... that's where you give up all hope. I'm not sure why you or I or any of us bother to try... just let it play out and live our lives as best we can. Why bother?
