"If Taxing the hell out of automobiles would bring the auto-industry to have a rethink, in other words creating more efficient cars, I would be very happy."

I'm not really blaming the auto-industry "directly".
Of course, they plan according to market demand - i.e. what the consumer wants.

My comment was actually blaming the politicians ...

1. for not making the public aware that energy can only get more expensive
2. for not signalling to the auto-industry that they should also be making this statement to the public, and plan accordingly.

Let's face it, the auto-industry could spend their advertising dollars on educating the consumers rather than pandering to them IMO !
Toyota is doing this !

In the 1970's, I saw a UK TV report called "Tomorrow's World" wher they demonstrated ( using a Ford Capri ) that petrol can be mixed with water 50/50, via an utlrasonic mixer placed just befor the carburetta. The energy efficiency was improved as well as the environmental aspects.
This idea was probably patented, bought, and put on the shelf - rather than risking a drop in oil revenues!

Another Company here in Germany has an invention that is now 15 years old. It's an Oil-Filtering system that means you can drive ca. 150,000 Kilometers WITHOUT an oil change !
They have installed this system into thousands of cars - on the wishes of the customer - and it definitely works, absolutely no question !
There was a recent TV report on this where the Co. director said he'd approached the politicians about asking the auto-industry to make this mandatory - no interest was shown !!!!!

The filter-system costs ca. 300 Euros to install and saves at least 10 oil-changes as well as improving the environment.
( Old-Oil disposal is a major environmental problem here in Europe =
