My Mercedes Diesel uses 7 litres. An oil change with filter costs ca. 180$ here in Germany - every 15,000 Km. ( I change oil more regularly than recommended - to protect the motor )

The German company I mentioned has had "auditors" check out the wear-and-tear on various motors using their filter-system - with top results BTW.

The "subject" of the TV report on this company was "environmental protection". My point was that although we pay an "extra environment tax" on petrol/diesel, the German politicians effectively prove ( to me ) this is not about the environment, but just a another new idea for raping the taxpayer. i.e. If they were serious, they would have much such a filtering-system mandatory for German car-builders.

Talking about GM for a moment :
My wife has an Opel Zafira ( GM ) turbo-diesel.
It's a family estate car in US terms.
When we bought it (new), I was shocked that after 2,000 Km. , the oil-warning system turned on.
We had the oil checked and had to add another 2 litres.
We asked Opel about this, they checked the official specs and told us that "this was normal" and that the oil consumption would decline after 10,000 Km. as the motor is new.
We are now at 50,000 Km.
Audit trail:
Km. 1-20,000 ... required 1 litre oil per 1,000 Km.
Km. 20,001 - 50,000 .. requires 1 litre oil per 2,000 Km.

BTW, my 3 Mercedes (diesels) have NEVER burnt oil !
( ca. 1 mio. Km. with 3 Mercs and the only "one" problem was when a water-pump failed at 300,000 Km - just as I got home thank G*d ;-).
