It's quite interesting to me that so many are convinced about the need that all worth anything must have 'proof', 'objectiveness', etc. when the very basis of everything, including science rests on subjective awareness.

This reviewer makes me think passing on Bennett's book might be the right move:

"That's it. That's all there is to Natural Selection: a simple four step loop; a mindless algorithm that displays no intent, no design, no purpose, no goal, no deeper meaning. Dennett uses this nuance to refute Godel's and Penrose's objections to Mind as being something "special", something more than the result of a Darwinian process."

Seems to me the topic of "choice or not" might be the basis for this also. Since advanced physics seems to be pointing to observers changing {creating?} reality {Heisenberg, etc} IMO you have to go with that. Showing how some mindless mechanical algorithem 'could' describe evolution doesn't make it so.... and so far science points TO mind, not away from it IMHO.
