>Actually I've never even understood this one fully. Is a "gay marriage" the same as a "gay civil union"? Do "most people" oppose both, or just gay marriage?

Can I give an Elroy-type solution?

We should get rid of government-acknowledged marriages. Everybody who wants the governmental benefits of coupling, gay or straight, should get a civil union from the state. Let marriage be strictly a church thing.

I have nothing against "gay union" - as long as membership is not compulsory for me. Gay marriage IMO is an oxymoron.
