"I have strong opinions on bananas" >>a tribute to the fruit, called "Yes, Nós Temos Bananas", which means in english: "Yes, We have Bananas." So, we (Brazil) are the authentic Republic of Bananas, in the geographic, economic (and perhaps now, on the musical) sense.<<

The city is 1.000m above sea level but it goes down to sea level in about 50Km. So it is down there and close enought they cultivate banana caturra. They don't look like Chiquita, but they taste just delicious! Chiquita is like those women who look gorgeous but are lousy in bed.

So lets explain about the banana. They put them in a chamber keeping them at a certian temperature and rippen then by flooding the chamber with gas. They kind of do a Dachau to the bananas.

But if they are rippen after removen from the bunch, naturally they are much more tasty.

You can't stop eating them!!! Thye look like that:

an.com.br

revistagloborural.globo.com

They are being threated by a desease called 'sigatoka negra' and we are fighting to save them from extinction.

The music is carnival song goes like this:

>>Yes, we have bananas!
Bananas to give away and to sell
Banana, girl, has vitamins, bananas, makes you fat and makes you grow up.<<

I come from a banana Republic!

Google translation is a bit funny.

Banana

The banana, fruit of the banana tree, is a tropical fruit of green, when green color, and turns yellow, when mature. Its format is prolongated, seemed with the format of a cucumber, however of lesser bore. The pulp of the banana is of color cream and has a soft texture however in such a way how much melequenta one. After cut it becomes gloomy with easiness. The seeds are very small and can be engolidas without bigger problems, together with the pulp.

The banana is one steals very practical for not needing places setting for the consumption - excepting situations where the banana is served flambada in desserts of fine suppers. But, although its great praticidade to the consumption, in if treating to the transport, the banana offers some upheavals - it ripens quickly when removed of its cluster and kneads with easiness for having a rind not so resistant as of the mexerica, for example. Moreover the banana is a very aromatical fruit, transferring its odor to objects that enter in CONATO with the fruit. For these reasons, somebody that has taken bananas in the stock market to consume during one afternoon of work fatally will be white of chacota.

Many varieties of banana exist. The consumed variety more is "the nanica" banana also called banana "caturra" - this name being most appropriate since this variety is of so great greater enters the some species of banana. The banana "of the land" is of slightly bigger size that "caturra" and has a more angular, arestada and dark rind. Very it is appreciated in Antonina and the environs, in its cozida modality, following the typical plate of the region - "barreado" - and also in the form of "banana bullet". Already the banana "apple" has lesser size, rounded off form more and more is indicated for inestinais problems, therefore it has regulating effect of the "guts". The banana "silver" has the same so great of the banana "apple" but it possesss the similar rind to the banana "of the land", for being also a little angular. The valued variety more in the market is the banana "silver" that is being vendida today R$ 2,69 the kilo - a nonsense when price of banana "used is thought about the expression" to assign "low price" (ok, already I stopped with the quotations marks).

Another banana very known of the Brazilian is traditional also "the manguito" call - the obsceno gesture that consists of folding the arm with the closed fist and holding the fold of the elbow with the other hand.

There's a movement, a global movement, to be able to get fresh and tasty food such as you describe. I belong to a couple of groups, Slow Food, and Southern Foodways Alliance.

Do y'all have Korean greengrocers in NZ? Koreans eat a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables, and Korean grocery stores cater to those tastes.

One thing I've noticed here is that obvious immigrants, from all over the world, fill up their grocery carts with fresh fruits and vegetables, not frozen, canned or prepared foods.

The Korean groceries I go to, in the fresh produce section, are jammed with Asians, Middle Easterners, Latinos, Africans, Eastern Europeans, etc., so you can hardly move.

Not the meats, Koreans eat strange meats (bull's pizzles, pork bungs, pork uteri!). And their seafood isn't all that fresh either, although they sell dozens of different kinds of fish, shrimp, oysters, snails, and so forth.

There is a new Chinese grocery I need to go to that has live fish tanks.

I don't know about Kiwis but Brits in general are famous for not having extremely fresh ingredients.
