CB, thanks for the nectarine tips. By care and attention, a tolerable one can be had here. But in Montpellier 3 months ago, they were all good. Just grab a whole lot and start scoffing.

Peaches! We had a peach tree in the 1950s and 1960s and it produced beautiful peaches. We had two, but I'm thinking of the freestone variety we had. I have never eaten peaches like it since. Meaning all others are pale imitations.

Last night I discussed all this with my cousin who was a fruit grower [as were others in my family]. He said I simply can't get the good stuff any more, because of the way marketing systems demand certain fruit and consumers have a price/quality/size/shape/colour preference which is not mine, so I'm stuck with the democratic fruit for which the majority will give most profit. That fruit is akin to wallpaper paste.

The French are perhaps more discerning - in some respects anyway.
