They did incarcerate and kill millions. Well, that's certainly an effective way to "run religion out of the marketplace of ideas." There's no way, however, that eschewing "Merry Christmas" could be effective toward that end so it's preposterous to suggest that that's their rationale. Their rationale has to be something that makes at least a modicum of sense. What makes sense is that they want it out of their face or they want everyone to be included. Suppressing the fact that religion exists makes no sense.
