Suppressing the fact that religion exists makes no sense.

Of course it doesn't. But that doesn't stop it from happening. The Chinese are very much aware of the power of ideas. That is why they supress the hell out of them. Except, of course, where it profits them to steal them. Every totalitarian movement tries to suppress ideas they don't agree with. The American left is at it's heart a totalitarian movement. So they try to suppress ideas when they can.

Totalitarian: Of, relating to, being, or imposing a form of government in which the political authority exercises absolute and centralized control over all aspects of life, the individual is subordinated to the state, and opposing political and cultural expression is suppressed: “A totalitarian regime crushes all autonomous institutions in its drive to seize the human soul” (Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.).
