What you miss is that they did not practice what they preached and they did some pretty damn awful things. It wasn't some bad apples, they all participated in slavery and wiping out the Indians and suppressing the rights of women and minorities.

It's important to note the bad as well as the good to keep progress in perspective. We are the humble servants of a document that even it's creators did not fully appreciate the possibilities of what it would bring about. They are to be congratulated, but not worshiped. The changes wrought in our country could not have happened without the vigilance and energy of those that came after nor without those that came before.

You lament some of this progress because it also protects some things that are very distasteful, but it is these protections that allow us to engage in this word play. God forbid that a day comes when what either of us is saying is considered seditious or unpatriotic and banned or made illegal. That is why we protect the speech of the fringes.

You say the good guys won and I say the good guys are still fighting.
