<Bush has done worse than any other president I can remember.>

Yea, I remember they said that about Carter too as oil went from $4 to $40. :)) In any case, I don't disagree, I have little opinion about that issue. The issue was near or actual despotism if you look back at the posts.

<Also, evil intentions generally result from stringent moral convictions.>

Well, that topic could be a Psychology Doctoral dissertation... I think such a statement as it pertains to Bush is simply a positionality you hold on the subject of him as a (overly religious?)person and president.

<To my dismay we are observing quite a few parallels at this time in other cultures. >

That may be, however the contextual background of then (Nazi era) vs now sheds light on the dramatic evolution of our society made since then. The worst of the worst black helicopter crowd drama queens aren't close to conjuring up stories like back then.

<It is not an issue if friends of GWB consider him a good or bad person as I believe that history has judged him already.>

Well, actually history can't possibly have judged him already... but I now what you mean. :)) FWIW I remember hearing the same thing about Regan before he finished his first year in office... it was unthinkable to almost any liberal back then (myself included) that he could possibly have the image he has now. Impossible. Funny how things work.

<With regard to the war, there is no question in my mind that entering into a unilateral conflict is evil by most moral codes.>

Well, to be fair you DO need context included with that subject... how about the attempt against Cuba with the missiles coming in? What if someone WAS stockpiling nuclear weapons and had them targeted at US cities:

"""I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

What's your take on Truman's decision??? He could arguably be the biggest mass murderer in the planets history given a certain (moral) context... or the savor or many lives.

I agree with you on the rest... ie. US foreign relations, etc... we need some integrity... but I still say Bush is nothing new on that score.

"Also, evil intentions generally result from stringent moral convictions. The narrowness of these convictions encourages the conduct of immoral deeds in order to bring back order and virtue. Hitler and the Nazis were prime examples and their slogans were extremely moralistic and very much appealed to religious conservatives in Germany. To my dismay we are observing quite a few parallels at this time in other cultures."
Regli, you have crystalized the most troubling aspect of our times and spotlighted an aspect of human nature that has led to widespread pain and misery for centuries. Religious fundamentalism and/or nationalistic "moral superiority" can lead to catastrophic acts regardless of which flag or dogma it's wrapped in. The pendulum has been swinging away from the liberal antithesis (which has it's own set of problems, just not so catastrophic)for some time now. The question is whether the pendulum stops before the global shit hits the fan.

The US has never had "moral authority". We have had military superiority.
