"I know that I look to the Dems more than you or John, but it helps that they exist and are immediate"

The Democratic party has been taken over by risk managers. They poll and plan, and poll and don't act. If they change that, fine. If they don't, fine. The former case they will survive. The latter case means they die. I don't have an emotional investment either way, except it will be nicer for most people if they take the first.

".............there has to be a serious restructuring of American goals and priorities........."

Yup. Historically speaking, massive failures like with the storms or the massive miscalculation of Iraq or what seems to be most of the Republicans coming up on charges of one form or other, tends to mean a realignment is in the offing. I don't think we have ever seen this sort of confluence of major forces. I am inclined to believe that people will accept bigger changes as a result. That is, as long as the reformers don't turn out to be bigger crooks than the ones they replace. Make no mistake, there will be changes. The forewarned need to be aware and insure that the changes are for the better, instead of random ones that cancel each other out and we wind up in the same place again...

It is the whole "mandate of heaven" thing. The Republicans and the status quo were cut a lot of slack because they seemed to be otherwise taking care of business. But it is crystal clear that they weren't. And they aren't capable of even regrouping and attacking the problems. Instead, they ignore them and keep on doing the same old, same old at a higher rate than before.
