There is one good reason for the death penalty. Revenge. That's reason enough for me.

How many executed murderers have murdered again? Never say never.

It does after they are dead. My point was, it prevents recidivism, not the initial crime.

The main purpose of the death penalty is not deterrance of crime, protection of society etc. The main purpose is to satisfy us an pay back the criminal for his killing. Revenge is the purpose and is an old time honored motive in most societies. The issue is whether we have advanced beyond this "pay back" mentality as a society. We have limited the death penalty ( pay back) to only the most egregious murders, too adults only and used a long process of separate jury hearing to decide to insure dignity, reliability, and limit the passion. Whether we take the next step to abolish it is up to society and our society differs a lot based on different parts of US, culture etc.
