I'm with you in this issue of school as fomenting social skills in kids. t is one of the reasons that I put my experiment in an American school (international school that follows US curriculum).

It is not good if the kid can crunch numbers like hell but doesb't know how to get his pint across, doesn;t know how to persuade other people of his point of views. Doesn;t know how to write convincingly.

I underdand TJ's angle of saying, a narrown band guy most likely won't make much money unless lucky or joining a guy who can make his skills count. (Stephen Wosniak partnering with Steve Jobs is an example).

I met a few Indonesians highly educated by the Bandung Institute of Technology. But they were really limited in the English language and in their outlook in general.

Met then in 1994. Met then again last year. They haven't progressed at all!!!! A Brazilian technician achieved the same level of progress with 4 yeat technical school.

Mean while I keep an eye on my experiment. I read some piece from her (last year third grade) and I found really basic. I said: "You should do better than describe something"

Then she told me that the working is divided into parts:

free writing
persuasive writing
report writing
narrative writing
fanstasy writing

Her work was to do a piece of report writing! I was amazed!

Now check this out:

The 4th Grade is a Tennessee teacher who comes from a term in Singapore's International. Guess what: She is now insisting in more math.

CB,
Teaching children to make good grades doesn't help them learn to bond with others, form relationships that will help them all their lives.

A much underrated skill in schools..

I tend to agree with your post, hence my previous ' marks are not enough ' post. When I was young, growing up in Montreal every neighbourhood had a Chinese Laundry and restaurant. Now that is no longer true, in Montreal or Toronto. Well we still have restaurants :o)

Understanding other people is critical. My daughter's comprehension of algebra is not as good as mine was for the same age (I'm tough on my kids in some things) .. but I recently found out that she is tutoring algebra to her peers in trade for help in history which she hates... Her report cards consistently indicate leadership and mediator qualities... I'm happy :o)

All A's does not a success make..
K

British culture heavily influenced by Norman invasion of 1066.
Normans (North men) were Scandanavians - Vikings who were briefly influenced by contact with the French.

Exactly the reason and is the typical excuse <<bonding issues .. teamwork and cooperation, and how to resolve problems without breaking the bonds>>. Exactly the reason for ineptitude of the IT dept, and removal of the high school grad IT manager after long and difficult 6 years. A mainframe bought about 7 years ago, is finally being implemented or incorporated today, into the system. Outdated equipment? Many other problems that caused inefficiencies. The HS graduate hid under the IT security blanket for many yuears, and used it well as the excuse for the sluggish ineptitude - that everything must be double and triple checked, even Microsoft updates get implemented 6 months late. His job was abolished because company decided to outsource the function. Har, har, har! Your <<bonding issues .. teamwork and cooperation, and how to resolve problems without breaking the bonds>> are such a joke.
