That's interesting elmat... my dad (not a nurturing type and he did a lot of things wrong LOL) taught me two great truths ... learn how to think... then you can always get answers... and learn to overcome your baggage... ie... mitigate your biases...

"We were just clever..."
-------------------------------------------------------
The word "clever" has a negative connotation attached to it. Therefore, I would say you were "motivated" not "clever."

To date we are still searching to identify the catalysts that trigger motivation in individuals.
Little attention has been directed at deutero-learning ("how people learn to learn.")

Regards.

>We were just clever and hard working enough to pick the best for us. That's it. But I don't think there's something special about the places one comes from.>

It is true that many immigrants to USA from India are among the more educated ones in India. But for very educated Indian outside India there are 10 inside India who nearly as good and equally ambitious. And one generation later there will be 30 for each Indian outside India. In that way India may be different from Brazil. The talent pool is huge and growing.
