"So, in other words, you're profiting at the expense of your fellow taxpayers"
Yes, we all do. People who don't smoke pay for those who do by paying for the difference in tobacco tax which is in turn used for smoker's health problems. There are countless examples

"So what's the return for current investors in non-subsidized windmills?"

I don't know.

"As for $100/bbl oil, should that occur and maintain that price based upon more than market speculation, then oil will likely be replaced by more cost effective energy sources. Certainly, it makes Tar Sands more cost effect, and possibly even oil shale."

$70 oil put gas prices up to $3.30, $100 oil would put gas prices up to $4.70 or so. Assuming that there is sufficient refining capacity.
By 2025 world oil demand is put to 119 billion barrels per year up 35%. Refining capacity will have to increase by at least 1/7th and the rest will have to be taken up by unproven technology to extract oil from tar sands and shale. These technologies are heavily energy dependent. A-bombs have been used to heat up oil shale, didn't work as far as I know.
Inflation will also have to be held near or at zero otherwise the dislocations in society will dominate the political scene. More important is that the extra refining capacity will have to begin to come on line within 10 years, perhaps sooner. I wouldn't bet the farm on that happening.
