As an aside, it looks as if HP and Walmart are sizing each other up to take some marketshare from Dell. That might have some interesting implications.

Well after that fiasco, Wal Mart may be losing share........period. When they didn't have enough per store, why didn't they announce they would honor the requests of the first 500 customers or first 300 customers and put them on back order? Really lousy handling of the problem.

I was in Beaumont for Thanksgiving, and the police had to use pepper spray on the crowd over this item. Walmart and/or HP really flubbed it.
That bad, eh? TV showed some scenes that wouldn't certainly merit police intervention and arrests, though.

Initial reports were that each Walmart would have 150 to 200 units for sale.
In some states (such as CA) they HAVE to give a rain check at the sale price, so "running out" won't cover them. It does seem to prevent problems like these. Maybe the state legislature there needs to get busy. An ad for a much-wanted item at a bargain price with way too low a supply is just an invitation to trouble.

Initial reports were that each Walmart would have 150 to 200 units for sale. Reality was the number was much less. I was in Beaumont for Thanksgiving, and the police had to use pepper spray on the crowd over this item. Walmart and/or HP really flubbed it. Given the degree of national exposure, it was pretty much a given that there was going to be demand.

I was surprised you guys went to Beaumont instead of the other way around. Has Beaumont/your folks pretty much recovered from the hurricane?
