Not sure I agree with your assessment of the "real" issue, but I do believe that the purpose of eliminating Saddam was to establish a modern, civilized state in Iraq as well as to combat terrorism in the LONG haul! It may have been too ambitious, but we shall see. It cannot be denied that, if successful, democracy in Iraq will have a dramatic effect in bringing the Arab world into the world community.
