America wouldn't have pre-emptively invaded Iraq to "free the Iraqi people". Bush used fearmongering with WMD's that he had very thin evidence for - he knew exactly how he was misleading us.

As it turns out, it would have been better if they were more forthcoming about the other reasons.

Indeed, much of the most recent counter-attack against the Dems hinges on this very point. You should look at the right-wing pundits total fixation on bashing the Dems wrt to the word lie, while totally ignoring the credibility issue that Bush has. There is a lot of backfilling going on now, trying to make it look like Bush was in fact going to war regardless of 9/11 and WMD. Well, then Bush should have made that a bit more clear a few years ago. Look at the back and forth on the word imminent as used by Bush. Dems (or anti-war types) take that as intentional hype bordering on a lie, while Reps vigorously deny that the context supports that contention. The Reps are trying to make sure there is no outright lie smoking gun, while ignoring the hugh failure in the overall program. Bush could IMO, salvage a fair amount of respect by coming clean on the topic, but I don't expect it of him.

It is very difficult to induce others to help themselves, when you are hated. This is equally true when applied to Americans in Iraq as it is to Dems/Reps helping each other. What a screwed up mess.

I still like the three state solution, but the longer we go down the current road, the less likely it is that even that approach will work. I'd hazard it is already too poisoned an atmosphere.
