With long supply lines, it is easier to "defend" at home than adventuring into foreign hostile countries with zero support for the invasion. Did Adolf really think he could occupy the USSR? He seemed to be a megalomaniac, like Islamic Jihad.

At least in Iraq, there is a good section of the community in favour of COW support [and cash flow].
