Jim,
I personally believe that it's already happening. I have a son in Mechanical Engineering who tells me some of the things that are in the development stage regarding medical discoveries. Mechanical Eng. seems to be focused primarily on "medical" engineering at this time.

More OT, Jim, RE: Actually I agree with Andy Grove and suspect a lot of future medical discoveries will be made by PhDs..Engineers etc rather than MDs.

Most researchers in medicine have both an MD and a PhD.
