Researchers don't get paid as much ...if they make a mistake, nobody dies - they just start the next project

Not completely true ! A lot of medical researchers are working on living human beings and developing new treatments and new surgical procedures. They also have MD degrees and have Phd as well, and they get paid a fraction of what they would make if they go to work for a HMO, and a lot less than working in a private practice.
