You made sense right up until that last paragraph. I think the President, and I agree with him, sees the situation as a gift to the Islamic world that they had best make use of.

We should NOT be standing in the middle of the civil war, having both sides take pot shots at us and use us to blame all their problems on, not be trying to halt the progress of historic tides. Buddy, you're over looking a simple fact. If we withdraw before the current Iraqi Gov't is strong enough to control things then we'll have a civil war but I doubt that in itself will cause Islam to progress. What it will do is to interrupt the flow of oil from the ME. It would have the real possibility of dragging other ME countries into the conflict. Instead of a mere trickle of weapons and insurgents coming out of Iran and Syria you'd have a river......I could go on as to how easily it could escalate.
