I didn't know the Catholic church was against contraceptives. I knew abortions but not contraceptives. I am sure they have their illogical reasons.

Very logical...need sheep for a dwindling flock.

They've toned down the rhetoric in the US, but that has been the case ever since the 1960s when that encyclical was issued by the Vatican. The basic idea is that children are blessings from God and the use of contraceptives is man's attempt to circumvent God's will.

This has not sat well with American Catholics and has caused a rift in the Church. For decades now, the American Catholics have operated with a great deal of independence from the Vatican.
