The founding fathers were mostly religious men who realized the folly of mixing government with religion hence the clear separation of church and state. eg. make no law respecting an establishment of religion.

Really, the founding fathers also lived in a more "ignorant" time 230 years ago - that some clung to "superstitious" beliefs is likely less indicative of a weak mind than it would be today.

With the resurgence of religious fundamentalism in the States and Middle East and subsequent war for no good reason its abundantly clear why the wise founding fathers did not found a state allied with a particular religion. A secular nation is a stronger nation.
