Usually, people say that homosexuality has no evolutionary advantage, but given the large numbers in all human populations, there's some good cause. <his mercenary legions had unexpectedly (to him) high numbers of homosexual men. > Maybe that's it. Maybe territorial action in tribal war-mongering has been a historical function of homosexuality, like there are soldier insects in certain species who protect the colony to propagate the DNA. cnnstudentnews.cnn.com <Just as humans protect their homes and families, the largest and strongest "soldier" ants attack intruders, including army ants, anteaters, and even human scientists. Schultz describes the reaction to an intruder. "One or more worker ants will react by releasing alarm pheromones. Soldier ants within the colony will start moving toward the source of this pheromone, and attack anything that's not supposed to be there." A pheromone is an airborne molecule -- an odor -- and a soldier ant's reaction to "smelling" this alarm signal is rapid and deadly. Soldier ants arrive almost immediately and begin biting intruders in order to protect the colony. The nest is the ants' home and the colony is their family, and they make that very clear. > Tribes have a gene pool and protecting and propagating that gene pool is the name of the game. It's not simply protection and propagation of the individual's DNA though that's the main game in evolution. By killing off all the males in a neighbouring tribe, that clears out all the Y chromosomes and competing DNA and the victorious tribe can move in and use the women to propagate their Y chromosome and DNA further. Hey presto, a highly successful DNA propagation method. Mqurice
