Buddy, You are talking about popes and the regimen of the catholic denomination. That ain't the same animal as the majority of Christian faiths. I have had many friends that were Catholic, but detest the political hierarchy of the Vatican. The Pope, and the Cardinals, live in splendor and wealth, while many of their followers don't have enough to eat. The Pope is nothing but another human being, and is no closer to God than anyone else. The candles lit by the parishaners will burn his hands like any other man. I have not been talking about a state sponsored religion. I want Christians to have the same rights as any other religion. That is in danger in this nation because of the politically correct extremists. If an Arab is in public, and says "praise Allah" nobody says a damned thing, but if a Christian says "Merry Christmas" liberal pricks get their noses all out of joint.
