I am very comfortable with roberts on the court but not so alito although i am not sure that i would vote against him. I never trusted the intent of the early cons who grew up in the goldwater movement and immediatley after. When Lester Maddox banned blacks from his chicken restaurant these folks rose to his defense. They did the same in opposing the public accomodations section of the 1964 civil rights act. I always asked folks who believed this back then where a black family sleep if motels denied them rooms or where should they eat when old lester was challenging them with an axe. They always said they should build their own place and i said how does an oppressed people circa 1960 get the cash to do that. Dont get me started.
Many now say they were wrong but it seems Alito took this way of thinking with him to princeton where he opposed affirmative action for minorities but not for dumb legacy students and where he opposed womens admission to the school. Alito is a 60s guy but in 50s clothing and i worry about those types.
And then looking for a job in the reagan administration he was very quick to take on Roe v Wade. It seems to me he was taking his religious beliefs and trying to impose them on the rest of us as opposed to just arguing the logic of Roe which legal scholars on both sides largely agree is flawed. I dont think alito will be bork on the court but there are reasons to suspect he might be reactionary and not just conservative.

The founders were also strongly against us having a standing army here in the "land of the free". You never hear the right wingnuts tout THAT!
