I think that was more confirmation... I strongly suspect that the turning point for most Shia was when they learnt that we intended to stay there past Saddam's overthrow. That after all is when we changed from being 'liberators' to 'occupiers' (I will resist using the more prejudicial terms).
Being incompetent and woefully expensive just made things worse.

I agree. Even many of the Sunnis were OK with Saddam going. The problem now is various polls of Iraqis showing that many of them view us not very kindly, and would like to see us go.
