Uh, fella, maybe you ought to check out the membershi of the Security Council and the UN Charter. On the one hand, the world operates on a mundane level of pecking for food, crossing the street, and trying to steal the profit from non profit associations. On the other hand, the world plays out collective visions on a grand level of meaning and purpose. Yeah,and it plays it out with airplanes slamming into buildings too. Some of us got extremely pissed about that. We refused to accept Duray's "those aren't innocents- -they trade aginst me every day" argument. Time worked out the step upon the moon--once the vision was in place. Time worked out the French Revolution, once the vision was in place: the American Revolution, too. Time worked out the fate of British rule of southern North America. And of the French Kings, too. Think they liked it? We eradicated smallpox: Vision, energy, DIRECTION--and time. In some of the countries of Africa, 40% of the poulation has AIDS- -and no drugs. Their gov'ts spends money on war and civivl war instead. How many of those people will be alive when the gov'ts clean up their acts? How many lives do they get. "In the long run" is a pretty poor answer. In the long run we are all dead. We drove Hitler into a bunker with a pistol, a woman, and a dog (and for all you rednecks: YES. With a pistol, a woman, and a dog you can do almost anything!). Sure. Like defeat those approachng Russian infantry and armored coluumns? How did we get by the tanks, the planes, the fanatical vision to rule the world? We just got busy with our own vision. Who exactly rules the world? No one that I know of. If the collective vision is for a world united against terrorists and against WMD's--then we will have it. BUT IT ISN'T! That's exactly the problem! France is not what it was and not what it will be. I'll say. Try bribed yellow bellied cowards. Nor is anything else. We did not escape the earth's pull with canons (as Verne proposed). But we did escape it. Unless you're talking aout the Pope and his angels, that's "cannons". In any case, the initial acceleration would turn any mere hurman into red jelly. As to who you wish to consider as a power deserving to have input in a world which is now a global village where we are all affected by acts and initiatives---well that only matters if you are concerned about enemies--or friends (he says, tongue in cheek). And that reminds me of a certain Tricky Dick who changed the course of history by visiting a little Nation of short people and shaking their tiny cunning hands--Hands so tiny and cunning they can make a calculator fit on your key chain--right next to your travel kit and your television set. <g> What's that mean in English?
