Perhaps Karen's definition of "extremely left wing" differs from yours.

I think my position on this is somewhat between yours and hers. I understand your point and agree to it to an extent.

How much more connected can you get...

Let me try a different angle on this. I think where we're at odds is the nature of the connection. I'm talking about the most direct cause and effect, not a collateral relationship.

Let's take environmentalism. Somewhere in the Bible man is commanded to be good stewards of the earth. Now, there are a lot of environmentalists around who are also Christians. Do you really think that they read the Bible, saw the command, and decided to sign up with the Sierra club and only vote for environmentalist candidates? Not hardly. The relationship is that they started out loving pandas or the woods and became environmentalists noting concurrently or even afterwards that they get a gold star from Christianity for doing so. Their Christianity supports their politics, which is not the same thing as the politics flowing from the religion as it does so strongly on the right.

That's my last idea for getting across the distinction.
