Maybe in 2008 a presidential candidate will say, "The presidency is not an imperial office. A president must lead in times of crisis, but never forget that he is answerable to the U.S. Constitution and the American people who voted for him. Upholding and defending the Constitution means never letting it fall to the wayside when lesser motives and lesser principles try to prevail. We are better than that as a country. We must be. We are the United States of America."

That's what patriotism is all about to me, not flags and banners.

I think that once the rhetoric and emotion is stripped away, this will be the basic issue. Some people believe that security and war can demand and justify a stretching of the law and would rather give up certain things to ensure safety, while others would prefer to take the risks and not compromise any of our rights. They will see this as an abuse of power, a criminal rather than a legitimate and legal executive act.

I hope we can avoid too much of the rhetoric and stick to issues here.

By using a limited tragedy as an excuse to weaken our historic protections, Bush threatens our entire country- something not even the terrorists were able to do.</i.

This entire post is very well said, e. Thanks.
