I would want to be very sure that there is no chance of that myth becoming real

How safe do you want to be and what are you willing to pay for it. Do we really want to leave no stone unturned in our efforts to protect ourselves from terrorists? Brownshirts? Bird flu? Global warming? Auto accidents? Floods/earthquakes/hurricanes? Bathtub falls? West Nile virus? Cryptosporidium? Meteors?

I'd rather do what is reasonable, appropriate, and affordable relative to actual risk. And we can't do that unless we consider risk--the likeliho that something will occur and the amount of damage it would do. I know that we cannot do everything needed to eliminate all the risks without destroying our economy and our lifestyle and even then we could never achieve perfect safety. Brownshirts, tongue-in-cheek or actual, are intuitively a tiny risk. As well may be the terrorists that the Patriot Act is aimed at.

Maybe we should build levees all around the country instead...
