Etch, I agree with the article posted earlier about the likelihood of a new technology for faster chip processing. IMO, if a new paradyme technology were developed, where perhaps smaller wafers (or even discrete wafers)could be processed at a faster rate it would negate the need for larger wafers to do the same thing albeit at a much higher development and infrastructure cost. My instinct tells me that this is the most cost efficient and least capital intensive way for the industry to go. It makes good business sense. Much better than migrating to 450mm wafers. The key seems to be rapid and fully integrated factory automation based on simplicity and reliability of design, rather than inordinate complexity and massive development expense. BB

And from what I read we can see a move to 4 core processors. Sun is already shipping an 8 core processor with the UltraSPARC T1. Large L2 caches tends to take up more real estate than processor cores themselves. If you do a search for die photos of processors with large L2 caches, you can see for yourself.
