McCarthy probably served a valuable purpose undermining the Communist cause here in the states, (just as Israel served a valuable purpose knocking out Nuclear interests earlier in the middle east) however the methods McCarthy used frightened many average Americans and frankly toward the end I think McCarthy did go overboard. The final insult was when he accused Ike of being a PINKO, that was prepostorous and ended McCarthy's career and legacy. jdn
