Any thoughts on why the increases to the GLD etf are generally around 3 tons?

My only thought is that the broker/dealer participants are either only willing to go short shares or contractually limited to being short what amounts to 3 tons. No idea if this is correct but am interested in a logical reason for understanding why increases take place at a level close to three tons. Will it mean anything if significantly more than 3 tons is added?
